Career Evolution

From Creative Instinct to Data-Driven Optimization

Pim's career did not start in CRO. It evolved from creating digital experiences to understanding how people use them, measuring what works and ultimately optimizing complete customer journeys based on evidence.

01 · Learning how to create

Creative, design and early e-commerce

Pim started his professional career in graphic design, entertainment and creative direction. Through GeneralGFX he worked on projects for artists, DJs and entertainment brands, before expanding into websites, online communities, fashion, merchandising and early e-commerce.

This period provided the creative foundation he still uses today when developing concepts and solutions to digital problems.

02 · Learning how people use digital

UX, products and customer journeys

At Albumprinter, Blokker, Makro and later Vattenfall, the focus increasingly shifted from how experiences looked toward how people actually interacted with them.

Product UX, responsive design, self-service environments, e-commerce journeys, international localization and commercial performance became increasingly important parts of the work.

03 · Learning how to prove what works

Data-informed design and experimentation

At fonQ, creative and UX decisions were increasingly combined with CRO, customer behavior and performance data.

At First Screen in Dubai, large-scale experimentation across more than 90 countries made one lesson especially clear: creative intuition alone could not reliably predict what would perform best.

04 · Becoming fully data-driven

Dedicated hands-on CRO

After returning to the Netherlands, Pim deliberately moved deeper into conversion optimization as a dedicated discipline. At Viking Direct / Office Depot he became fully hands-on with behavioral analysis, hypothesis development, A/B testing and experiment analysis.

Instead of deciding what should work, the process increasingly became about gathering evidence, developing solutions and validating whether they actually improved performance.

05 · Complete ownership

From specialist to optimization lead

At Bikkelhart, Pim added pitching, client management, strategy and complete CRO program ownership to his hands-on optimization experience. Through PrettyDamnGreat and later agency collaborations, that evolved into his current role: combining research, data, UX, experimentation, strategy and leadership to improve complete digital customer journeys.

Creative enough to develop solutions.
Analytical enough not to trust them without evidence.

Creative & Design → UX & E-commerce → ROI-driven UX → Data-informed Design → Experimentation at Scale → Data-driven CRO → Conversion & Digital Optimization

Experimentation & A/B Testing

Hypothesis development, experiment design, A/B and multivariate testing, test prioritization, analysis and translating results into actionable learnings.

Customer Journey & Funnel Optimization

Analyzing and improving complete customer journeys rather than optimizing individual pages in isolation, from acquisition and landing pages through product discovery, checkout and beyond.

UX & Digital Experience

Combining behavioral evidence, research and extensive UX experience to identify friction and develop clearer, more persuasive and more effective digital experiences.

Analytics & Research

Quantitative analysis, behavioral analytics, qualitative research, funnel analysis and combining multiple sources of evidence to understand what is happening and why.

Personalization

Using audience, behavior, context and customer journey stage to create more relevant digital experiences instead of assuming every visitor should receive the same journey.

Product listing pages, product detail pages, navigation, search, merchandising, cart, checkout, promotions and other critical parts of the e-commerce journey.

CRO Leadership

Building optimization programs, managing backlogs, directing designers and developers, aligning stakeholders and translating research and experimentation into business decisions.

Professional Experience

Creative, Digital & E-commerce Foundations

Pim's early career combined creative entrepreneurship with a growing focus on digital products, websites, e-commerce and user experience.

2002–2009 · GeneralGFX

Founder / Creative Director

Pim founded GeneralGFX at the beginning of his professional career, initially focusing heavily on the international entertainment industry before expanding into websites, fashion, online communities and e-commerce.

His creative work included CD and DVD covers, merchandising, promotional artwork, billboards, banners and other campaign materials. He worked with artists and entertainment figures including The Game, Brooke Hogan, DJ Skee, DJ Scream, DJ Woogie, Rick Ross, SAS / Dipset, Cashis, Mr. Probz, SugaCane / Red Light Boogie and Salah Edin.

Pim worked as an in-house designer for rapper The Game and for Brooke Hogan, while also supporting other artists and DJs through creative and digital projects.

As the internet became a larger part of the entertainment ecosystem, his work expanded into building websites for artists and his own projects. He was also the first administrator of WorldStarHipHop during its early development.

This period also introduced Pim to e-commerce. He created and managed websites selling mixtapes, DVDs, merchandise and clothing, and worked with fashion labels including Red Monkey Jeans and Apple Bottom Jeans.

2009–2011 · Albumprinter / Albelli

Senior Web Designer / UX Designer

In 2009, Pim deliberately moved from independent creative work into a larger digital organization to broaden his professional e-commerce and UX experience.

At Albumprinter, he worked across web design, UX/UI, digital branding and the experience of online photo-product creation tools. The work required simplifying relatively complex creation processes so consumers could design and order personalized photo products online.

One notable project was the design of the first online photo book editor for HEMA.

Pim and the wider team also worked on establishing Albelli as its own consumer brand. For partner labels, his work frequently involved adapting digital experiences to external brand guidelines and supporting joint promotional campaigns.

2011 · Blokker

Interim E-commerce & Visual Strategy Specialist

Pim joined Blokker on an interim basis, temporarily covering part of the design function while also developing new visual and digital concepts for presentation to the board.

Although these concepts were not implemented immediately during the assignment, elements of the proposed direction could later be recognized in subsequent iterations of the Blokker webshop.

Focus

E-commerce · Visual Strategy · Digital Concepts · UX/CX · Board-level Concept Development

2011–2012 · Makro / METRO Group

Interim E-commerce Specialist

Pim joined Makro with the initial assignment to help establish the company's first e-commerce webshop for the Dutch market.

The project required coordination with parent organization METRO Group in Germany. During the assignment, the strategic direction changed and the Netherlands was designated as a test market using a localized version of an existing METRO e-commerce platform.

Professional Experience

International UX, E-commerce & Digital Leadership

2012–2014 · Vattenfall / Nuon · Amsterdam, Berlin & Stockholm

Online Design Lead / International Digital Experience & UX

Pim was the only in-house creative specialist within the service team, working internationally across Nuon in the Netherlands and Vattenfall in Germany and Sweden.

Roughly 60% of his role focused on the Dutch Nuon organization, with approximately 20% focused on Germany and 20% on Vattenfall's Swedish headquarters. He regularly worked from Berlin and Stockholm while remaining primarily based in the Netherlands.

For Nuon, Pim combined hands-on digital design with ownership of the online visual experience. He created campaign banners and landing pages, developed and maintained the digital part of the corporate style guide and acted as the primary visual stakeholder responsible for safeguarding the brand across online channels.

While offline branding was managed by Corporate Branding together with an external branding agency, Pim translated and governed the identity across digital customer touchpoints and directed multiple external agencies involved in their delivery.

He acted as a central visual stakeholder for major initiatives including the first Mijn Nuon mobile app, Nuon Community and improvements to the online self-service environment.

For Vattenfall Germany and Sweden, the role was more strongly focused on ROI-driven UX. Local branding agencies produced visual concepts, after which Pim reviewed and adapted digital designs to improve usability, customer experience and commercial effectiveness.

Pim was later assigned to the planned Nuon-to-Vattenfall rebrand in the Netherlands. He translated the digital design direction used in Sweden and Germany into a Dutch experience. When management decided not to complete the full brand transition at that stage, the work evolved into an endorsement approach using the Nuon identity with “powered by Vattenfall”, updated UX/UI and a transitional visual system.

2014–2016 · fonQ

Art Director / Creative & Digital Design Lead

Pim joined fonQ when there was no dedicated internal creative and design department. He was hired as Art Director with the assignment of building an in-house creative capability from the ground up.

Starting with an existing DTP designer and intern, Pim expanded the department by hiring UX and photography expertise and ultimately built and managed a team of approximately 7 FTE.

The team supported the daily creative needs of the growing e-commerce organization, including product photography, website banners, email campaigns, print materials, packaging and partner communications.

With no comprehensive visual guideline in place, Pim developed a style guide to create greater consistency across fonQ's growing number of digital and physical customer touchpoints.

Building a new responsive e-commerce experience

Together with an external UX designer he brought into the project, Pim created a new responsive fonQ e-commerce experience from scratch.

Following launch, Pim continued improving the website together with a CRO/CX specialist within the marketing team, combining creative and UX expertise with conversion insights and performance data.

Google also acted as an external sparring partner during this period, with specialists regularly visiting the fonQ office to share recommendations and learnings from other e-commerce businesses.

Within six months following the launch of the responsive website, fonQ recorded approximately +50% desktop revenue and +125% mobile revenue. These figures describe the commercial development during the period following launch and are not intended to attribute the total increase exclusively to the redesign.

Beyond the webshop

Pim and his team also restyled the existing showroom, established an internal photography setup, redesigned delivery trucks, created an online inspiration environment and transformed the annual catalogue into a quarterly inspiration magazine.

Professional Experience

Experimentation at Scale & Analytics Leadership

2016–2017 · First Screen · Dubai

Creative Director / Growth & Experimentation Lead

At First Screen in Dubai, Pim led a multidisciplinary team of approximately 8 FTE, including UX designers, front-end developers and game designers.

The company marketed consumer mobile applications across more than 90 countries. The team worked not only on the products themselves, but heavily on acquisition campaigns, landing experiences and conversion funnels used to grow them internationally.

Rather than relying only on conventional advertising, many campaigns were developed as interactive or gamified experiences, combining creative concepts, UX, front-end development and game mechanics.

Continuous A/B/C/D experimentation

First Screen became an important turning point in Pim's approach to optimization. Individual campaigns could run four competing creative or funnel variants simultaneously.

Once sufficient traffic produced a clear winning variant, the losing concepts were removed and replaced by three new challengers informed by the previous winner.

This created a continuous experimentation cycle:

Creative concept → Interactive experience → Traffic → Experiment → Learning → New variants → Repeat

With large volumes of relatively inexpensive traffic acquired through real-time bidding, the team could run experiments across large numbers of campaigns and markets.

The resulting data demonstrated how strongly customer response could differ between countries, regions, audiences and creative approaches. Visual treatments or campaign concepts that performed well in one market could produce completely different outcomes elsewhere.

This reinforced a principle that later became central to Pim's CRO approach: what looks best or feels right is not necessarily what performs best.

2017 · Thomas Cook

Interim UX & Analytics Manager

Pim was brought into Thomas Cook with responsibility for UX and analytics across the Dutch Neckermann and Vrij Uit travel brands.

He led a cross-functional team consisting of one analyst, one UX designer, one front-end developer and one full-stack developer, connecting analytics and customer behavior insights directly with UX and technical implementation.

His responsibilities included analyzing digital performance, identifying opportunities and risks in the booking journey, developing UX improvements and coordinating implementation with the development team.

Alongside the Dutch brands, Pim also developed proposals for Thomas Cook UK and worked with the broader international digital organization in London.

The role reinforced his use of analytics as a decision-making tool, rather than simply a reporting function. When data highlighted concerning patterns or opportunities, Pim translated these into recommendations and escalated relevant insights to stakeholders locally and in London.

The work focused on website design, UX/UI, website delivery, graphic design and broader digital projects.

Over time, Pim deliberately repositioned his career and PrettyDamnGreat toward conversion optimization, experimentation and digital performance, building on his existing experience in e-commerce, UX, analytics and large-scale experimentation.

2023–2024 · CLUSE

2021–2023 · Viking Direct / Office Depot · Venlo

He joined Viking Direct / Office Depot in Venlo in a full-time digital experience and CRO role, working across the e-commerce customer journey.

This period gave Pim deeper hands-on experience independently running and analyzing website experiments, from behavioral analysis and opportunity identification to hypotheses, test setup, evaluation and subsequent optimization.

2023–2024 · Bikkelhart

Senior CRO Manager

After developing deeper hands-on CRO expertise at Viking, Pim joined Bikkelhart, an agency combining data and creativity.

This role added another important dimension to his experience: independently managing both the optimization work and the client relationship surrounding it.

Pim learned to pitch CRO engagements, lead client conversations, develop strategies, manage optimization backlogs, prioritize hypotheses, coordinate experiments and present findings and recommendations.

He worked directly on CRO engagements for PowerPeers, Motrac and De Hypotheker, while also supporting colleagues with optimization work relating to accounts including New10, InShared and ENGIE.

Internally, Pim also contributed to the development of Bikkelhart's CRO proposition, approach, pitch materials, prioritization processes and performance reporting.

The experience demonstrated that he could independently run CRO work from the first client conversation through research, experimentation and final recommendations. This became an important step toward focusing fully on independent consulting through PrettyDamnGreat.
