CAREER & EXPERIENCE
I didn’t start my career in conversion optimization. I started as a graphic designer.
More than two decades later, my work spans creative direction, UX, e-commerce, customer journeys, analytics, experimentation, CRO and digital growth.
Looking back, those are not separate careers. They are different stages of learning how to create, how people interact with what we create and, eventually, how to prove whether it actually works.
01. From Product & Graphic Design
My professional career started in the early 2000s with GeneralGFX, my graphic design and creative company.
I worked extensively within the international entertainment industry, creating CD and DVD covers, mixtape artwork, merchandise, websites, banners, billboards and promotional campaigns.
That included working in-house for The Game and Brooke Hogan, alongside projects involving artists and entertainment figures such as Rick Ross, Cashis, Mr. Probz, DJ Skee, DJ Scream, DJ Woogie and SAS / Dipset.
But this period taught me something more valuable than how to make things look good.
It taught me how visual communication influences perception, how quickly you need to capture attention and how important it is to understand the audience you are creating for.
At the same time, my work was already moving online. I built websites, managed online communities and worked with early e-commerce businesses selling music, merchandise and fashion.
02. To UX, E-commerce & Rebranding
As digital became more important, my focus gradually shifted from how something looks to how somebody actually uses it.
At companies including Albumprinter / Albelli, Blokker and Makro, I moved deeper into web design, product UX, e-commerce and digital customer journeys.
That evolution continued at Nuon / Vattenfall, where I worked as Online Design Lead across the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden.
I was responsible for the online visual experience at Nuon, helped develop and maintain its digital brand guidelines and worked with external agencies to translate the brand consistently across digital customer touchpoints.
I was also involved in the planned transition from Nuon to Vattenfall, translating the international Vattenfall digital direction into an experience suitable for the Dutch market.
The role increasingly combined branding with ROI-driven UX, usability and commercial performance.
03. To Responsive E-commerce & Data-informed Design
The next major step came at fonQ.
I joined as Art Director and built an internal creative and design capability that eventually grew to approximately seven FTE across creative, UX and photography.
Together with an external UX specialist, I developed a completely new responsive e-commerce experience for fonQ across desktop, tablet and mobile.
But what became increasingly interesting to me was what happened after something had been designed.
Following the launch, we continued improving the webshop together with CRO/CX expertise inside the marketing team, combining UX and creative thinking with customer behavior and commercial data.
Within six months following the responsive launch, fonQ recorded approximately +50% desktop revenue and +125% mobile revenue. Those numbers describe the commercial development during that period and should not be interpreted as revenue caused exclusively by the redesign.
That distinction is important because it represents how my thinking was changing.
Good design was no longer enough. I wanted evidence.
04. To Experimentation & Conversion Optimization
That eventually brought me deeper into experimentation.
At First Screen in Dubai, I led creative, UX and development disciplines while working with acquisition and conversion funnels across more than 90 countries.
We continuously ran competing creative and funnel variants. Winners became the basis for new challengers, creating an ongoing cycle of experimentation and learning.
It reinforced something that is still fundamental to how I work today:
What looks best or feels right is not necessarily what performs best.
After returning to the Netherlands, I deliberately moved further into hands-on CRO and experimentation at Viking Direct / Office Depot, working with behavioral analytics, hypotheses, A/B testing and experiment analysis.
Later, at Bikkelhart and through PrettyDamnGreat, that evolved into complete ownership of conversion optimization: research, analytics, customer journeys, UX, experimentation, strategy, stakeholder management and optimization roadmaps.
05. Where Those Worlds Meet Today
The A/B test shown in the image above is a simple example of where that journey has taken me.
Instead of redesigning an entire experience because we believe it will work better, we can identify specific opportunities, develop a hypothesis and validate the impact.
In this example, adding clearer product tags to product listing pages resulted in a +22.8% uplift in conversion rate.
Small visual change. Measurable commercial impact.
And that is why I don’t see creative, UX, CX, analytics and CRO as isolated disciplines.
A conversion problem can originate in the proposition, communication, visual hierarchy, usability, customer journey, technology, merchandising or simply a misunderstanding of what customers actually need.
My background allows me to approach those problems from multiple perspectives.
Creative enough to develop solutions.
Analytical enough not to trust them without evidence.
From Creative Instinct to Data-driven Optimization
If I had to summarize more than 20 years of professional development in one line, it would probably be:
Graphic Design → UX → E-commerce → Customer Journey → Analytics → Experimentation → CRO → Conversion & Digital Optimization
The tools changed. The job titles changed. The scale changed.
The underlying question never really did:
How can we make this work better for the person using it and for the business behind it?
So, nice to meet you. I’m Pim.
